BURNING UP THE PAVEMENT AT CHARIOTS OF FIRE

A dozen fire-footed employees from Mattioli Woods' Newmarket office took to the grounds and cobbled paths of the University of Cambridge's stunning colleges as two teams went head to head at the 2018 edition of Chariots of Fire.

The 1.7-mile relay race – held in honour of the famous 1981 film of the same name, which detailed Cambridge runner Harold Abrahams' bid to win gold at the 1924 Olympics – took place on Sunday 17 September, with Team Mattioli and Team Woods battling it out while raising money for a fantastic local cause.

Team Mattioli – made up of chief investment officer Simon Gibson, CRMs Donna Keates, Rob Atkinson, David Dodd, Josh Davis and communications partner Rebecca Hubbard – came out ahead, crossing the line in 01:20:32, with Team Woods – investment director Ian Goodchild, fund operations lead Aaron Carman, investment manager Scott Bradshaw, deputy investment operations manager Katy Merryweather, investment apprentice Oli Amps and investment analyst Jonathon Marchant – crossing just a short time later in 01:24:30.

In taking on the race, the two teams have so far raised £665 – beating their target of £650, with hopefully more to come. Race funds this year are going to the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, which will use the sponsorship money to support a wide range of charitable organisations aiming to engage and help young people facing disadvantage.

Simon Gibson – who kicked off Team Mattioli's efforts by running the first leg – said he thought the race went "brilliantly".

"Everyone put in a shift – we can't all be whippets like… well, some are quicker than others – and there was great camaraderie and competition between and among the teams.

"Thanks to David and Katy for sorting the teams and paperwork, and thanks to Rebecca, Rob, Donna, Josh and David for carrying me!

"There has already been a suggestion we might try an 'elite' Mattioli Woods team next year, with a fast six, and a second team (which I'll be in) to provide the realism…

"Regardless – great stuff all, and well done!"
